Every second shop on the main road sells cameras. Fewer can design a system that still works after the first summer, the first monsoon and the first month of load-shedding. Ask these seven questions.
1. Will you visit before quoting?
A quote without a site visit is a guess. Camera count, cable routes and power all depend on the building. A serious installer surveys first and gives you a placement drawing.
2. What happens when the power goes?
If the answer is a shrug, walk away. Ask how many hours of backup the recorder and cameras will have and how that was calculated.
3. Which brand and model, exactly?
"Hikvision 2MP" is not a model number. You need model numbers so you can compare quotes and check warranty terms.
4. What resolution and why?
2MP is fine for a corridor, not for a gate 20 metres away. The installer should explain the choice per camera, not sell one resolution everywhere.
5. How is the cabling run?
Conduit or trunking, labelled at both ends, tested. Loose cable on the wall is the first thing to fail.
6. What do I get at handover?
App set up on your phone, a device list with locations, warranty cards and login details. Written down.
7. Who answers the phone in six months?
Ask about maintenance contracts and response times. If none exist, support ends when the van leaves.
