DVR / XVR
Records HD-analog cameras over coaxial cable. Cheapest, tops out around 5MP, and the right choice when you are upgrading old wiring.
NVR
Records IP cameras over network cable. Supports 4K and analytics, one cable per camera for power and data, and no monthly fees. The default for new installations.
Cloud
Footage uploads to a subscription service. Convenient for a small shop that wants off-site backup, but recording stops when the internet drops and the monthly cost adds up across many cameras.
Our recommendation
NVR on site with a UPS, and optional cloud backup of key cameras if off-site copies matter to you.
